Myself

Seventeen years have flown past. Here I am, living in New Zealand (a small continent off the coast of Antarctica), and living the life of an ambitious student who wishes for nothing more than to learn, live and love. My drive for knowledge is a drug that I run off. There is never a limit to what a human being can know, and unlike actual drugs, it does not harm you- unless of course you are the Government and it all goes to your head. Philosophy fascinates me, it's a subject of infinite possibilities! Pursuing a career in journalism I've taken a break for two years. After finishing an apprenticeship in mechanic's I plan to continue with writing.

Does everything that has a beginning have an end?

  1. Nobody has answered the chicken or egg problem. And that's the Q.

    So I will.

    It was the egg.

Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life, so it must be the egg. In the beginning there was chaos, a chicken at least has a beginning, its end is....

    ...the dinner plate

It's no answer but it starts a conversation.

  2. Your observation of this matter is astounding. I salute you.

Mankind has a drive for knowledge, I myself suffer from this so called 'requirement' of knowing. However we can not explain what is before our time. This earth being here forever before us. When it came into existence, we will never know. But perhaps there is no scientific or philosophical answer to the questions that require a beginning or an end.

Perhaps we as individuals AND as a race need to step back and look at this realistically.
In the end, the chicken all tastes the same.

I do assure you that my next conversation starter will be based upon your chicken theory. Smashing.

  3. A ring has no end, but I don't know if that counts because I'm not sure if it has a beginning... Pie has a beginning but no end I think. Infinity has a beginning but no end.

  4. This is true.
The question that is then raised is, what is an end.
For of course a ring is circular, round, and has no end that we can place our finger upon. But if you place your finger on one side of the ring, you can move it across to the opposite side, and then beyond that is nothing. It depends on whether you attack the question physically or mentally. Ah yes, pie- you are quite correct and as far as infinity is concerned, that is debatable as to whether 'infinity' is being used in a context that states the time beginning from when said.
infinite(y)- limitless or endless in space, extent, or size; impossible to measure or calculate
There is however no indication as to whether this is applying to time FORWARD of our present existence. Perhaps it could be referring to infinite past too. Depending on your religious stance this could mean that infinity has a beginning, or it could mean the opposite.
I'm not too sure, I haven't read up on this ;)
